On November 20, 2024, a delegation led by Mr. Rod Smith, the Group Managing Director of International Education for Cambridge University Press and Assessment, visited the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training in Islamabad. The purpose of this visit was to meet with Federal Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between Cambridge University Press and the Ministry of Federal Education to elevate the quality of education in Pakistan.
Strengthening Education in Pakistan
During the meeting, Federal Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui highlighted the positive contributions of Cambridge University Press in enhancing education across the world, including in Pakistan. He expressed appreciation for the role Cambridge has played in providing high-quality education to the youth of the country. Dr. Khalid emphasized that while Cambridge’s efforts so far have been commendable, there is still room for expanding its role in Pakistan.
One of the key points raised by Dr. Khalid was the importance of enhancing the assessment capabilities of local education boards. He emphasized that transparency in assessment and increased engagement between educational bodies and institutions is crucial to ensure the effective delivery of education in the country. This MoU, he noted, will help bring greater clarity and improve the quality of assessments, setting a new standard for educational practices in Pakistan.
Focus on Improving Educational Standards
The MoU sets a framework for collaboration between Cambridge University Press and the Ministry of Federal Education, with a focus on enhancing educational standards in selected federal government schools in Islamabad. Secretary Education, Mr. Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, briefed the Minister on the details of the agreement. The MoU aims to introduce Cambridge qualifications in four Islamabad-based schools, which will significantly enhance the educational opportunities available to students.
The four selected schools that will benefit from this initiative are:
Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-6/2
Islamabad Model College for Boys, G-6/3
Islamabad Model College for Boys, F-8/3
Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-8/1
These schools will now offer Cambridge’s Lower Secondary, IGCSE, and A-Level qualifications, which are globally recognized. This initiative will allow students to receive a world-class education, preparing them for higher education and career opportunities both in Pakistan and abroad.
Capacity Building for Teachers and Students
The MoU not only focuses on improving student outcomes but also on capacity building among teaching staff. The partnership will ensure that educators are equipped with the necessary skills and resources to effectively deliver the Cambridge curriculum. This professional development will enable teachers to provide a more learner-centered approach to education, fostering critical thinking and creativity among students.
Additionally, the MoU aims to open up new global opportunities for Pakistani students by providing them with access to international qualifications. These qualifications will help students pursue higher education abroad and improve their chances of securing jobs in global markets.
A Step Towards Globalization of Education
The collaboration between Cambridge University Press and the Ministry of Federal Education represents a significant step towards the globalization of education in Pakistan. By introducing internationally recognized qualifications and building capacity within local educational institutions, the MoU aims to prepare students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world. This partnership will also support the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education and foster a more inclusive, dynamic, and future-ready educational system in Pakistan.
The signing of this MoU marks a new chapter in the relationship between the Ministry of Federal Education and Cambridge University Press, with the goal of providing Pakistan’s youth with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in an increasingly globalized world.
