Azad Kashmir Shuts Schools & Colleges for Two Days After Deadly Rains and Landslides
Muzaffarabad, AJK – In the wake of relentless rains, deadly landslides, and a devastating cloudburst, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has ordered the closure of all public and private schools and colleges for two days — August 15 and 16, 2025 — as a precautionary measure to protect students and staff.
Why the Sudden Closure?
The Education Department issued the notification after days of heavy rainfall triggered landslides, flooding, and dangerous road conditions across the region. Officials say the temporary closure is crucial to ensure safety as the situation remains unstable.
A Tragic Turn of Events
The weather crisis escalated dramatically on Thursday when a cloudburst in the Naseerabad area of Muzaffarabad unleashed sudden flash floods, tragically claiming the lives of six members of one family.
In Bagh, torrential downpours caused rivers and streams to overflow, while in Samahni, high-level flooding in Bhimber Nullah inundated low-lying communities.
Other Regions Also Affected
The extreme weather isn’t confined to AJK. Gilgit-Baltistan has been battered by heavy rains, leading to landslides and flash floods that have already claimed 10 lives in separate incidents.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of continued rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours, keeping emergency services and disaster management teams on high alert. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant for further weather updates.
