Punjab Announces Decision on Summer Vacation Extension Amid Flood Emergency
The Punjab Education Department has officially issued a notification granting deputy commissioners across the province the authority to decide on school closures in flood-affected areas. This comes as heavy monsoon rains and flooding continue to disrupt normal life in several districts.
Schools & Colleges Closed in Affected Districts
In line with the notification, school and college closures are already being implemented in areas severely hit by floods:
-
Sargodha (Kot Momin Tehsil): All educational institutions shut for seven days and will remain closed until September 2.
-
Lahore Division: The Director of Colleges announced holidays in 16 institutions located in flood-hit areas.
-
Nankana Sahib: Schools and colleges in Mandi Faizabad and Syedwala closed for two days.
-
Kasur (Kanganpur): Local colleges also announced short-term closures.
These steps are being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, while also allowing buildings to serve as temporary shelters for displaced families.
PPSC Examinations Postponed
In a related move, Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) Chairman Muhammad Abdul Aziz chaired a meeting where it was decided to postpone all written examinations scheduled for August 30 and 31.
The decision was made keeping in mind the flood emergency and the difficulties faced by candidates traveling from affected areas.
Why This Decision Matters
The floods in Punjab have not only damaged infrastructure but have also disrupted education at a large scale. By giving authority to deputy commissioners, the government is ensuring a district-wise flexible approach—allowing quick decisions based on local conditions.
This ensures:
-
Safety of students & teachers
-
Accommodation for flood victims in schools and colleges
-
Fair opportunity for exam candidates without risking lives
